How to maximise the space you have in a small house
If your house is on the smaller side or it's just starting to feel a bit cramped, there are a number of things you can do to utilise the space you have and make it appear bigger. Below we have shared some of our top tips.
Shelves are a great way to store things in an orderly fashion. They keep everything off the floor and allow you to display things you wouldn't otherwise be able to.
Choose furniture that is multi-functional
If you don't have much space in your house, opt for furniture that can either be easily stored away or used for other things as well. A sofa bed for example is a great way to fit a sofa and a bed into your room. Also look out for tables which can be folded away or are extendable so when you need it, you can make it bigger and when it's not in use, it's not taking up as much space.
Use hidden storage
Hidden storage allows you to neatly tidy everything away and remove clutter. A less cluttered house creates the illusion of space and is especially important in a small home. Look out for beds that have draws in them, tables with drawers and you can even get chairs which lift up for extra storage.
Store things vertically
If you're limited for floor space, try to store things vertically. This will take up less space in the room so you can move around more freely and/or have extra furniture.
Put things into self storage
If you have items that you don't use very often, it may be worth considering putting them into self storage. Doing this means that you can free up space in your house without the need to throw away things that you don't want to.
One of the great things about self storage is that you can access your belongings whenever you need them.
Make the most out of unused space
If you have a loft, make sure you use it otherwise it's just wasted space. You could be storing books, paperwork, clothes, furniture, photos and appliances you don't use very often. If you don't use your garage for cars or the shed for gardening tools, you can also use these areas for additional storage.
If you have a small home, you are unfortunately going to have to be ruthless with the things you keep and the things you throw away. Every few months go through all of your possessions and decide whether or not you really need them. If you haven't used or worn something for a very long time, it's probably time to throw it away or take it to a charity shop.
Removing clutter from your home not only makes the place look much cleaner and bigger, it has also been proven to reduce stress levels.
